Kirsten Lea is an acclaimed producer, writer and actress. We have done some work for her in the past (LoveLea Media) and she recently came to us again to help her out with her newest project, a website and blog to feature her talents as a writer. She had a very clear vision in mind of what she wanted the blog to look like, and how she wanted it to work. We started fleshing out her ideas and hammered out the design until she was completely happy with it. We love working with WordPress, so we designed a completely custom theme for the blog.
The overall look of the site is somewhat simple, however there were actually a lot of elements that needed to come together perfectly to really get the look Kirsten was going for. The homepage features three columns of article links, that contain the Title, a thumbnail, and an excerpt from each article. This gives the visitor a very quick look to see what her most recent articles are all about. We also added a social media bar to the top right of each page, so the visitor can share her site. We kept the design of this subtle, but noticeable enough so that it doesn’t get lost in the rest of the page.
Along with standard widgets in the sidebar such as Search and Archives, we also included a few other important ones. Kirsten really liked the idea of Tumblr’s “Ask Me Anything”, so we included that feature along with a link to her contact page. We also included a live Twitter feed widget, so people can see her most recent tweets, and also find her Twitter page in a single click. Below this we added an About the Author paragraph and a Tag Cloud. The article pages feature the same design throughout, and we focused on readability and overall appearance of the website.
Using WordPress for her website allowed us to provide her with a very user friendly backend. She can manage her articles, pictures, media and more. She can even check her Google Analytics right from the WordPress dashboard to see how her Search Engine Optimization efforts have been working. She can see incoming links, referrals, overall visits, and even where the visitors are coming from. For example, with Google Analytics integrated into the blog she can see if most of her visitors are coming from the Los Angeles area, Southern California, the whole country or Worldwide.
