One of our latest projects (and most adorable to date) is Cat Nap, who is based out of Rancho Cucamonga, CA. They design and build hand crafted “Trees” for cats. They came to us with an idea for the website, and needed us to make it into something tangible. We were more than happy to hear that the client wanted a WordPress website. We worked with them to create a truly unique and aesthetically pleasing custom design. The goal is their website was to sell products, so we needed to integrate an eCommerce solution into the website as well. We made it nice and easy for them to control every aspect of their Online Store right from the WordPress Dashboard.

We’ll first take a look at the About Page. Here, and throughout the rest of the site, we utilized large pictures to grab the visitor’s attention. A large pull quote brings the user in and sums up what Cat Nap’s website and mission is all about in two simple lines of text. We also broke down the About text into a two column layout in order to improve readability. Beneath that we provided the visitor with four helpful links. The first two allow the visitor to check out the products in the store, or to contact Cat Nap. The second two, differentiated by color, link directly to Cat Nap’s Social Media links.

Now, one of the most important pages on any eCommerce site… The landing page for the online store. Due to the fact that we really wanted to feature the two products, we kept it simple, easy, and bold. The initial store page shows both versions of the Cat Trees, with their name, the price, and a link for more details. Aside from that, we let the pictures of each do the work. The visitor will see both products, nice and large, so they can immediately tell which one they would like more information about.

Once they click to see more information, they are presented with the single product page. This page uses a combination of a product photo gallery, large background image, a description and a bulleted list to turn the website visitor into a customer. Whether the visitor is the type that likes to see detailed images or if they like to read in depth descriptions we have it covered. If they would like to, the visitor can easily add the product to their shopping cart with a simple click of a button. The cart is updated via AJAX so the page doesn’t even need to reload. A smooth animation on the cart notifies the user that the product has been added and allows them to checkout or continue browsing the site.

On top of the eCommerce functionality, since we used WordPress, it was easy for us to integrate a completely custom blog design as well. Since Cat Nap is all about cats and kittens, we decided to use large images on the blog homepage to pull the visitor into the articles. Not only is the blog a great way to build a relationship with website users and show a knowledge of the industry, but it is also great for Search Engine Optimization. Here at Bertino Designs we build all of our websites with SEO in mind, and advise many of our clients to blog regularly. We took it to the next level on Cat Nap’s blog, and you should really visit their website to see the functionality. The initial blog page loads the most recent articles in a very nice jQuery Masonry layout. As you scroll down the page, previous articles are loaded on demand. Not only does this reduce the initial load on the server, but let’s be honest, it looks really cool.

One page that is often overlooked on Websites is the Contact Page. On an eCommerce website these are a crucial tool to let the customer communicate with you. If they have questions before or after buying, any online seller should be readily and easily available for contact. We always put time into deciding layout and design for each page, including contact pages, so we were sure to make Cat Nap’s easy to use and visually appealing. The visitor can easily get the standard contact information, or they can fill out the form on the right hand side to send a message. Contact forms are a great tool to use, as the visitor doesn’t need to leave their web browser to send a message.

The homepage features a full page background slideshow. Essex has six lines of boats that they really wanted to push, so we made sure to feature the most important ones prominently on the homepage. Each slide also has a description and a link to learn more about the current boat. Beneath the slideshow is a simple carousel listing all of the boats. The user can simply click on the desired image and go directly to the product page.

Once they are on that page, they are presented with a completely custom boat information page. Each page was carefully designed to both illustrate and articulate all the important features of the boat. We used a combination of large, colorful images and big, bold text to emphasize important areas of information. Each boat also has its own general photo gallery and featured image gallery. These thumbnails open up the fullsize image in an elegant jQuery lightbox.

While we are on the subject of Photo Galleries, let’s head over to the Photo Gallery page. We utilized the same jQuery lightbox in order to keep a consistent look and feel throughout the site. One thing we really wanted to utilize on this website was horizontal space and layout. With more and more website visitors using widescreen monitors, the sides of a website are often wasted screen real estate. The front page background slideshow accomplishes this, and on the gallery page we were able to use that same space on the screen as well. We used jQuery Masonry to layout all of the thumbnails in a dynamic layout. The plugin actually allows us to detect the visitor’s screen width and layout the thumbnails accordingly. With the vast amount of pictures that Essex wanted to include this layout was crucial in helping us utilize space to its maximum potential.

You might think that the background slideshow, the boat pages, and the photo gallery were cool in themselves, but don’t think we neglected the other pages of the website. The Factory Information page features a lot of information about Essex’s building process. We used a simple secondary navigation menu on the left hand side, and some AJAX goodness to bring in the content as the user requests it. When they click a link in the menu, the information about that step appears to the right hand side, with text and pictures. We also used the same feature on the Testimonials page.

We recently had the pleasure of working with Lone Wolf Cigars, in Santa Monica, CA, on a complete redesign of their old website. We just launched the site, and we are very happy with how the project turned out. We got to use a lot of creativity throughout the entire design phase and right through the development process. The design appears clean and simple to the eye, but it also boasts several small features that work together to provide a nice user experience for the site visitor.

The homepage features a classic image slider, with simple yet effective numeric navigation. This allows a lot of information to be shown in a single space, without overwhelming the visitor. A carousel of logos is shown below that, displaying the brands that Lone Wolf Cigars carries. The carousel automatically scrolls, elegantly showing off the long list brands that you can purchase at their shop in Santa Monica. On the right hand side, we included three large links. When the user hovers over, the image scrolls up and reveals a straight forward call to action, including the ability to print a coupon.

The subpages all feature large background images to draw the users attention, but also feature similar layout to keep consistency throughout the website. The subpages have a large heading, allowing the user to know exactly where they are at any given moment. The white text is laid out on the dark background, offering the user nice readability for the user.

Lone Wolf also has a mailing list with Constant Contact that they wanted to build upon with their new website. Instead of creating an entire page for such a simple thing, we utilized a jQuery lightbox to display the signup form. When the visitor clicks the Register link, they are presented with a simple and clean subscription form. All they have to do is fill in their email address, click Submit, and they can easily return to the page that they were browsing beforehand.

Since Lonewolf Cigars is a brick and mortar shop, one of the main reasons for having the website is to bring customers from Southern California into their Santa Monica location. Thus, the contact page is a crucial part of the website’s success. Since we provide a Get Directions link on every page of the website, the need for an embedded Google Map is not there. Therefore, we got creative with it. We designed a completely custom map, that sticks with the theme of the site. The map is cleaner than a typical Google Map, and with only a quick glance, the website visitor can tell where the shop is located.

Miss Sarah Christine is an up and coming model in the Southern California area.  She came to us because she knew that Bertino Designs could design a website for her that would not only compliment her online presence but also do so in a style that matches her own creativity and style.  As always, we were more than happy to accept the opportunity.  The end result is a stylish and easy to use website.  Not only does it look great, but we also built the site with WordPress so it is extremely easy for her to update and modify.

Sarah attends many events, has frequent photoshoots, and constantly needs to keep her fans updated on her current activities.  Thanks to WordPress, she can do this with ease in her blog section.  Whether she wants to let people know about a new photoshoot, or if she wants to get the word out about a new product or piece of art that she is selling, it is all possible.  In her Blog section she can create new posts at her leisure.  Fans can also interact by leaving comments and voicing their opinion.  The blog is very scalable, as she can create her own categories of posts as well.

Since one of Sarah’s main focuses is her modelling, we put together an awesome gallery to display her portfolio.  She has complete control over the images, the captions, and ordering and much more.  On top of that functionality, it looks great, loads fast, and can hold as many pictures as she would like to include.

Although modeling is one of her main interests, Sarah also has a passion for creating things that range anywhere from art on canvas to handcrafted wallets and accessories.  Along with her portfolio, she also wanted to prominently feature her merchandise.  Not only did we create the website to display her work, we also created it to allow people to purchase right on the page.  The store was designed to be a nice clean layout, easy to navigate for the potential customers.  The products are shown in a grid layout, with their title, thumbnail, and price, along with an Add to Cart button and a link to learn more details.

Before she came to us for her website, Sarah had already started to develop a following online using social media sites such as Facebook and YouTube.  We wanted to integrate everything together as closely as possible so that they can all work with each other.  With this goal in mind, we worked in links and references to her Facebook page throughout the website.  In doing so, we can cross promote traffic, visitors and fans.

The homepage design is elegant and simple, yet it also has several areas of interest. The custom music player allows the visitor to hear some of DiCarlo Productions work right from the homepage. This entire music player is also easily managed from the WordPress backend. A large special is also featured, along with a print button that easily allows the user to take advantage of the online offer.

Beneath the featured area are three columns. They contain a Featured Artists tab, which allows for various artists to be featured, a Recent News Tab, and also a Twitter Widget. At the bottom of the page is the contact information, as well as Social Media icons. That way people from Southern California and all over the world can keep up with DiCarlo Productions.

The subpages from the site not only have been individually designed, but they also contain a uniform sidebar with useful links and information. This allows people to easily navigate the website, and it helps provide a very user friendly experience.

DiCarlo Productions has a lot of clients and events in Southern California, so one thing that they really needed was a news section. We built their news section on WordPress’ blogging system. The initial news page contains excerpts from their most recent articles, with links to read the full article. This is a great way for the client to consistently reach their visitors and target demographic. Our completely custom blog design doesn’t hurt either.

The studio that DiCarlo Productions has in Rancho Cucamonga is one thing that they really wanted to showcase. They have all state of the art equipment, and the location is one of the nicest in the entire Inland Empire area. They wanted to feature a lot of photo’s so that potential clients knew what kind of establishment they were working with. We solved this by designing a clean, user friendly photo gallery. Users can navigate through several pages of high quality pictures and DiCarlo Productions can update all of these right from the website backend.

The homepage features an elegant slideshow that features the most recently published blog articles. The title of the articles appear on the right hand side, next to a large picture that grabs the visitor’s attention. They can navigate directly to one of the latest blog posts just by clicking the title. On the homepage, we included a custom menu at the top, and also in the footer for ease of navigation. There are featured links that bring the visitor to the BetterHair Custom Chatroom, the Blog, and also allow the visitor to sign up for a Newsletter.

The chat features multiple rooms, and allows the client to moderate it right from the chat window. This allows her to interact directly with site visitors, and it really adds a nice dynamic element to potential customer interaction.

BetterHair also teaches classes in the Upland, California area, so we wanted to allow the visitors to not only get information about them, but also sign up and purchase class sessions directly through the website. Her Education page features her main classes, with a description and price for each, and allows the visitor to easily sign up through PayPal.

The services page features a similar layout to the blog. We used a little jQuery magic on both to allow the article excerpts, and the Services excerpts to stack nicely together. We also included the blog sidebar on the subpages, to keep the look of the site consistant, and also to allow the user to interact easily. The sidebar features several small, but powerful widgets. There is a poll, that allows site visitors to vote on whatever question BetterHair would like to ask. We also included links to their social media profiles, so people can easily stay up to date on their current events.

Matt also wanted to include an Events calendar that he could update on his website. We were able to integrate a calendar along with his WordPress install, so he can easily add events and update them himself. Upcoming events show in the sidebar of his site, and there is also a full calendar page which shows all the events on a monthly basis.

As I mentioned before, Truefit180 is a very in depth site, with countless resources. We also included a video gallery. What is really cool about this gallery, is the fact that it pulls the videos directly from Truefit180′s Youtube channel. So, when they upload a new video to Youtube, it is automatically added to the playlist on the site. The sleek, custom design of the gallery doesn’t hurt either. I guess here at Bertino Designs, we just like to make our clients more than happy.

Along with all of the web site features listed above, we included our completely custom graphic design work that really makes our sites stand out. We also included the standard pages, such as About and Contact. Although they might be standard pages, at Bertino Designs, you know we take them all to the next level.

With all of those features, and all that continuously growing content, we also included a very extensive footer to keep everything organized. It features links to categories, the newest posts, and serves as a sitemap to help visitors find their way around the site.
